This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I started a club on my campus called ManUP! The purpose of our club is to teach young, at-risk students the importance of self-improvement, empowerment, responsibility, and social awareness. Many of these students are actually in my mild-moderate special education class for grades 6th-8th.

Many if not all of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Our entire school is on free or reduced-price lunch for all students so we are definitely in need of outside resources that will help us achieve our yearly goals that fall under our creed. "We, the young men of ManUP! strive to become positive, successful students who serve as role models to those who look up to us. Through hard work, we strive to improve in the following areas: Self-Improvement, Empowerment, Responsibility, and Social Awareness."

My Project

Hi, my name is Roosevelt Johnson and I'm a teacher at a middle school in San Diego, California. Many of our students are beginning to stress out and resort to making bad decisions so I've decided to teach a boxing class. Being physically fit is critical at an early age. Most children who train in boxing tend to have lower, healthier Body Mass Index (BMI) levels than other kids. Obesity is unfortunately widespread in American youths. Boxing is a great solution to this.

Boxers are known for their extreme endurance and power.

Boxing teaches children to believe in themselves and build this confidence through training proper technique and mental strategy. Once you get in the ring, you feel like you can accomplish anything in life. Being in diverse atmospheres lowers social anxiety while activities like punching the heavy bag drive out aggression and stress, while making athletes feel accomplished.
