Tune Up!

Help me give my students tuners and cords that directly connect the tuner to their band instrument's sound.

My Students

When I tell other adults I teach beginning band... their eyes often widen in horror.

They obviously picture my job being: unruly students + loud instruments = chaotic, ear-splitting pain.

This is not our band.

Our band is full or responsible, kind, eager learners. Our band students come from diverse backgrounds, and although most have never studied music before, they are SO WILLING to try new things. They show incredible patience when other students struggle, and through band they better learn how to help each other through those struggles. They experience the joy of quality music (truly!), and the power of working together toward goals. They make true friends and develop a lifelong love of music.

My Project

One of the biggest challenges for beginners - and one their biggest worries - is whether they sound GOOD. Learning to play in tune is a huge part of this, and requires lots of practice and lots of accurate feedback. Learning to blend our sounds together and play in tune is always a challenge - with Covid closures this year, it is especially difficult.

With tuners they can use both at home and in school, students will get immediate feedback on their tone.

This will not only help them improve individually, but also give them more confidence to play with their peers - especially when they return after doing 'remote learning' due to Covid. The contact microphones will allow students to see their individual intonation, even when they are surrounded by the full band. When we all play in tune, our sounds blend together beautifully, giving students a strong emotion connection to each other, and to our school community.
