Trying to Reach the 21st Century

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are expected to be tech-savvy to meet the demands of the 21st century, however, due to budget restraints, there is a lack of technology in my classroom. With this laptop I will be able to address all student learning modalities and make the subject matter come to life.

My students are eager to learn and hardworking young people, who have learned to overcome obstacles for success.

Most of them are new Americans who live in the projects and are "latch key" kids who go home to empty apartments as their parent are working various shifts. 87% of our students are under the poverty rate and qualify for the free lunch program. They have little chance to use technology at home. Many students are (ELL) English Language Learners and need more engaging activities than textbooks provide especially since they are in computer driven world. I teach 160 students in three grades in both middle school and high school (8th, 9th and 12th) in four different classrooms and this laptop will allow me to give all my students to the advantages of technology.

My Project

Since I have to teach in four different classrooms this laptop will help me share this technology with all my students. It will allow me to connect to the Internet and show students how to search for information. I will be able to show them sites like Google Earth, Teacher Tube, Teacher's Domain, History Channel, Discovery Education, Brain Pop and a host of sites that provide the latest resources that my school cannot afford. I want to develop engaging and interactive presentations to make learning more fun. My students would use the laptop to do further research during Social Studies class. They would use the laptop to go on various interactive websites, to see pictures of concepts and time periods that are being discussed in class. Also, students would use these laptops to write research papers and read other material that will further explain class lessons. The laptop will provide them with the opportunity to access world-wide resources at the click of a mouse.

This one laptop will affect the lives of 160 of my students!

That's a huge return on investment! It will allow them the knowledge and skills to use a computer. It will enhance their learning experience as it will allow me to display portions of my lessons visually through PowerPoint and video clips to address their visual learning needs and play books on CD to assist those with auditory learning needs and make history come alive with interactive Internet sites.
