Music program in a large urban high school: Our grade 9-12 high school with over 4000 students has a flourishing music department that services all students for their required music credits as well as offering a sequence of performing ensembles for vocal and instrumental music. Students who have never had a previous opportunity can choose to sing in a beginning chorus, learn a band instrument, guitar or piano. For students with previous musical training there is a sequence of choral, band and orchestral groups which can prepare students for college, community and lifelong musical opportunities. Many of our music students participate in a unique interdisciplinary music theater project each semester performing a full-length musical or operetta. This is in conjunction with the language arts (drama), physical education (dance), fine arts (set and costumes), music (vocal and orchestra).

The dedication and enthusiasm shown by my students in our music programs in this high-needs school is greater than anywhere I have taught. Our musical instruments are in use in multiple classes daily and suffer from the natural effects of wear and tear. We go to great lengths to make them last as long as possible, emphasizing proper care, but despite best efforts they eventually wear out. Budget cuts endanger our ability to provide enough instruments for our students to use.

Replacing our non-functioning instruments with good student models with a proven track record of durability is key to maintaining and improving our music program. These new trombones will be used up to six periods each day!

Your donation will do much more than just help a flourishing yet cash-strapped urban music program. Music enhances and develops the literacy and higher thinking skills and discipline necessary for success in any major in college. In a recent senior awards ceremony at our school, 7 of the 13 top scholars honored were members of our top performing music groups! You will be investing in America's academic future.
