One of my fondest childhood memories is the annual visit to the Pumpkin Patch in the fall. I can still remember the colors, the smells, the excitement as my sister and I searched for the perfect pumpkin! As a teacher for 25 years, I have tried each autumn to make that excitement possible for my young students by taking a class trip to "the pumpkin patch." This year I am teaching a first grade class of English Language Development (ELD) students. I have 20 wonderful kids who come from 10 different countries and speak 9 different languages. For them, this is the first opportunity they have had to celebrate Autumn in America. Although I teach in an upper middle-class school, most of my ELD students are Title 1 students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The parents of my students have helped pay the admission costs for a trip to the Pumpkin Patch in October, and some have donated extra to help pay for the cost of the bus to get to the pumpkin patch. However, we still need some additional funding to pay for the rest of the cost of the bus. A trip to the Pumpkin Patch is a valuable learning experience. It incorporates math, science, oral and written language, and develops self-confidence in the ELD students as they venture away from the school campus for the day. For students new to our country, it gives them an opportunity to experience an Autumn tradition in America. Your help can make memories for my students that will last a lifetime!
