At our school, faculty and staff serve as academic instructors and as advisers. The purpose of advisory is to instill in our students "the will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence" (Confucius).
This particular cohort of seniors has had a unique journey in the past four years.
As a class, they have experienced loss and conflict. They are young people with such strong character and potential for greatness yet they doubt themselves because they come from Canarsie or how they are perceived by the world outside as youth of color. Despite the challenges they face, we as a school community have witnessed and fostered their transformation as a cohort, but most importantly, as individual leaders. For this reason, they are the class of the Phoenix: their legacy is one of rebirth, change, and identity.
In tandem with the film curriculum provided, our Senior class will work together to construct a life-size Phoenix to symbolize growth and change in their lives. Each feather will represent a defining moment of transformation, particularly moments where their potential as leaders and pioneers have shown through. They will also write individual memoirs, which is a collection of journal entries, photographs, and recordings on topics, such as pride, ambition, and vision. It is our hope as the Senior Team that the memoirs will serve as a platform for documentary film-making that can be used for their Senior Legacy Project.
Malala Yousafzai realized that she, despite her age, political, economic, and social status, can effect transformational change for other young women and become an inspiration to youth and adults alike around the world.
I want for my students to see this documentary as a blueprint for change. I want my students to identify a social issue in their communities and map out the steps they need to take in order to improve the quality of life for those around them.
