My Students

We teach immigrant and refugee students in a large, urban school district. Some students are newcomers, some are recent immigrants and others are first/second generation immigrants to our country. We also welcome students from the neighborhood and across our city; it makes for a wonderfully diverse population!

As with many urban school districts, our student population is mostly poor with almost all students qualifying for free lunches.

We have over thirty-two languages at our school and we love to celebrate our diversity with an International Festival every year.

Our students are eager to learn and love to explore all the books, toys and manipulatives that our school classroom has to offer in PreK. A few ways we teach our curriculum are with visuals, songs, finger plays, hands-on objects and through active participation.

These young bodies love to move and explore so we set up learning centers and outside play time that students rotate through in their daily routine.

We have noticed a great need for tactile and sensory manipulatives with many of our immigrant population. They have not had the exposure of most American children and crave touching and exploring with their hands through sensory experiences.

My Project

We really need to replenish our outdoor gross motor equipment; all of our trikes and scooters are old and falling apart. We try to take our students outside as often as the weather permits so they can exercise and get fresh air.

Many of our students do not go outside to play at home; it's essential that our school provides a safe and entertaining play space to provide for their physical and social/emotional development.

If we can ask Donors to fund our request for gross motor equipment, they will be filling an essential need for our PreK and Kindergarten students.
