Ms. McCarthy from Chicago IL is requesting Sports & Exercise Equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a Lakeshore School Trike, as well as a child safety helmet, to wear while they are playing outside during gross motor time!
My students are in a blended classroom that consists of a diverse crowd of special needs students, English language learners, and students from the general education population.
My students range in ages from three to five years old.
As a Special Education teacher, I serve a diverse crowd of students with special needs. The students I serve are mostly African-American and Hispanic. My students come from low socioeconomic circumstances. The parents and community try their best to support these students. These students inspire me to be a better teacher and person, and I learn from them daily. The uniqueness each of my students brings to the class is unimaginable.
Gross motor skills are a critical skill for any child, especially preschoolers to have! Gross motor skills have an influence on everyday functions. Gross motor skills increase the muscular strength as well as muscular endurance in young children. Within our preschool classroom some of the skills we try to concentrate on, in order for our preschoolers to one day function in a kindergarten class, are their posture, sensory processing, balance, coordination, and body awareness. Since many of my special needs students lack these skills we try every way possible to accommodate them to learn these critical skills. Some ways they learn these skills are by going on walks around the school, playing on the playground, using balls, hopscotches, and also hula hoops during outside time. My students absolutely love this time, but they can get bored of it quite easily.
That is why I am requesting a new trike and bike helmet for my students to experiment with new ways to take control of their gross motor skills!
I am requesting a bike, as well as a new helmet so that my students can enjoy, while also learning how to take turns, share and practice safety during our outdoor play! This bike would make a tremendous addition to our classroom outdoor play. This bike would be an amazing, new and exciting way for my students to also improve their gross motor skills, daily, without them actually realizing it!
