My Project

Teaching struggling readers is always a challenge so my team and I strive to give them rewards along the way to encourage them to do homework, practice sight words, and finish levels on their computer programs.

A big bulletin board is on our wall labeled "Sight Words are Poppin." As students learn 100 at a time, they receive a bag of smart popcorn as a reward.

We find when students know these basic sight words, it makes a difference in their daily reading. We play games with them as practice and also assign them as homework for practice with their families.

We also encourage students to work on the reading program called Lexia. As students complete levels, we reward them with a candy treat. It takes many days and sometimes several weeks of work to complete the levels, so it takes a while to earn this treat.
