Treasure Hunters: Learning through Geocaching

My students need GPS receivers, a mapping skills book, and compasses for small groups of students to explore map skills linked with additional curricular connections through geocaching.

My Students

Have you ever wanted to hunt for hidden treasures? The kids in two Enrichment Clusters will have this opportunity as they become geocachers and hunt for local treasures, as well as hide educational treasures for others using caches and GPS technology.

Enrichment Clusters are held once a week at our elementary school, a school with 99.9% of students in impoverished home situations.

Enrichment Clusters are part of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model, which provides all students with enrichment activities. Students choose a cluster based on their interests and work with a group of other students to investigate a real world topic or problem. Students working in this Enrichment Cluster have a passion for maps, technology, and modern-day treasure hunting. These phenomenal students will be able to explore this passion with teachers and community members who share the same love of geocaching.

My Project

Providing these eager students with GPS receivers for geocaching opens up a whole new world of learning and skills that our students would otherwise not receive. Students will learn about how a GPS receiver works and the history behind the creation of the GPS system. Some students might be interested in learning about the satellites themselves and make connections to science and technology. All of the students will learn how to use a compass and GPS coordinates to find their way to a cache; these geography skills truly come to life out of the social studies textbook through geocaching! Students will develop leadership and teamwork skills as they hunt treasure together – this is not a solitary pastime! Using strengths to assist the team will help our future geocachers prepare for careers where teamwork is a must! It’s only through hands-on, engaging activities like geocaching that students develop these skills.

This student-led Geocaching Cluster will support students as they design their own products and explorations.

Multiple curricular connections will be made through this engaging and hands-on course, which we hope to expand to regular classroom practices. We believe that it is our moral responsibility to give our students rigorous and meaningful learning experiences, and we believe geocaching is an effective way to challenge our students to take their learning outside the classroom!
