My students come from one of the lowest income areas in our state. Most students come from homes of trauma and because of this have a difficult time focusing in class on a daily basis.
Many students are not focused in class because the constant thought of what will happen after school is on their minds.
While being in one of the lowest income areas in our state we are also one of the larges elementary schools in our district.
My Project
My students do not lack the desire to learn, but at times due to their traumatic lives they lack the ability and/or desire to focus for the school day.
These items such as pencils, emoji key chains, stamps, snap bracelets, rings, and various other prize box items will be incentive for students to remain focused and work hard during the school day.
I don't want my students to only be motivated by extrinsic rewards, so through the year it will gradually become more difficult to earn the prizes. I believe these items will help make school into a more fun experience for 1st graders.
