I have 18 students in a very low socioeconomic neighborhood. Many students come to school not knowing any letters or sounds. By 1st grade most students are still struggling with reading and have little to no interest in books at their reading level. They enjoy having books read aloud to them or looking at pictures in books way above their reading level.
