Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, energetic, and fearless. In addition to traditional British literature, I want the books we read to reflect all of their best qualities. Living in a small and rural community, there is little opportunity that surrounds us. We are in need of upgraded books that mirror the diverse student population. To read about people who like you and go through same experiences as you is no small matter.
Many of my students experience poverty, speak English as a second language, and struggle at grade level reading.
I believe that the books students read should empower them. My students deserve books that are relevant and meaningful to them. They deserve books will showcase characters who are similar to them. They deserve books that take them on a journey, energize their minds, and instill a love for reading in their hearts.
They enjoy graphic novels, movies, hands on activities, and hunting.
My Project
Students deserve reading options that provide multicultural and diverse perspectives. This project's goal is to provide my senior class with world literature options. Many of them have not read books by authors of color or from authors living outside of the U.S.
I teach in a small town, but that doesn't mean that my students can venture beyond town lines.
Our school library is sparse. There are not many books, and the ones that are present, are not likely to be diverse in nature. Although we have the option to request books from the county, we compete with many larger schools and have to wait for our turn. I want my students to be able to have multicultural options at the ready.
As many of them are reluctant readers, perhaps due to the lack of options, it is important to encourage them to find a book to connect with. We live in a town that has a high poverty rate as well as a high minority population. This being said, there are not enough books that relate to their everyday realities. The books I have requested tell stories that my students will be able to resonate with in some way, shape, or form.
The books that I have requested are Persepolis, The Kite Runner, I Am Malala, and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. These all focus on some social justice issue and diverse cultures.
