My school is like a mini United Nations and they want to travel! My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds with more than 90% of our students receiving free and reduced price lunch. Currently, there are more than five different languages spoken in my class other than English at any one time!
I teach in a high poverty, high need urban school where I teach 8th grade Global Studies to a huge mix of learners that are in different levels of skills.
They are inquisitive, motivated to expand their horizons, and try new things. In my Global Studies room, it's all about making the connections from what they see in the news to what we are studying at that time. It's the "ah ha's" of the connections that my students get of connecting paper events to the reality and its impact of the world around them.
My Project
I want my students to be able to experience the world outside of the classroom. In having a class set of the Google cardboard viewers, we will be able to take field trips all over the world and never spend a penny! Virtual reality googles will expand the horizons of my students by being able to "see" what an oil field looks like while studying Russia or touring religious sites that are connected to the Middle East or going through the rainforest as we study Brazil.
The opportunities that the googles will provide will be an amazing way to enhance their learning and make connections to a real world.
