Providing students with choices in their reading has been shown time and again to increase students' engagement and performance. Students are able to select a book that is not only at their level, but is high interest. By 6th grade, student reading levels and interests vary so much that it is difficult to find a single text that relates to each student in the class.\r\n\r\nThe books from this project filled a few gaps in our library. One of the best ways to get a student reading is by finding them a series to read, as it provides them with several books to read just by finding one that they enjoy. With your help, students have had access to necessary materials like pencils, books, and creative supplies (colored pencils, paper.) This has allowed students to be focused on classwork instead of what they are going to use in class, and I have seen a big uptick in work completion as a result. We've also been able to complete some social-emotional learning activities that involve creativity, which students have both really enjoyed and benefited from as they learn to interact with each other positively in middle school.\r\n\r\nNational History Day has been our major focus in class, with all seventh graders working on individual research projects. The office supplies you generously helped to provide have allowed students to work on individual projects like documentaries, glue things to their tri-fold displays, and devise creative performances about historical events that drive their curiosity. They have been motivated, assisted, and supported by your generosity. The students and I are so grateful for all that you have done. I am teaching a reading program to 7th and 8th grade students. When older students are at a 1st/2nd grade reading level, it is difficult to find books of interest at their level. Graphic novels are great for this reason. With your support, I was able to add a few more high-interest (and requested) titles to my library. At the end of each lesson, we spell. The students love writing on personal white boards. I started the year with old boards that barely erased and erasers that were falling apart. With your help, I was able to get new boards, erasers, and markers. These nicer materials give students respect, and they continue to enjoy completing their spelling on them. Last, my homeroom students are very artistic, and had been asking for gel pens for quite some time. I took this opportunity to add gel pens to my project, which my 6th graders now use frequently in their art.","fullyFundedDate":1758849474818,"projectUrl":"project/working-to-dismantle-the-literacy-crisis/9727161/","projectTitle":"Working to Dismantle the Literacy Crisis!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Faust","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10268938"},{"teacherId":3826424,"projectId":9683565,"letterContent":"Our library has a popular and growing makerspace.
