It has been an amazing year of reading in my classroom. I teach students in a suburban middle school who have discovered the love of books this year as a result of daily independent reading. My students are smart, funny, hard-working and energetic. They crave understanding and freedom and have proven year after year that they can handle it. They never fail to surprise and enlighten me.
Overheard in my room "I was so bored, so I read 200 pages this weekend." It doesn't get any better than that!
We love book clubs! We love to read, and discuss interesting books about interesting characters. I've chosen books for this project that have characters who have a variety of struggles that middle school students might encounter, but might not know exactly what to do when they do.
I want them to explore the question: What impact do we have on each other?
These books all have people who have negative impacts, but also positive--not unlike our every day world. When students get to choose the books they read, they come alive with excitement. I want to give them many, many options that reflect their worlds, but also make them ponder the worlds of others.
