My students have requested a reading area to enjoy their independent reading books. I want to give it to them. Every day we read for the first 10 minutes of class. It is a glorious sight to look up and see 24 seventh graders with their heads buried in their own books. But, I want them to have a comfortable place to gather and do this so it feels more like a community, and students can be even more engaged while doing it as a result of this comfort. I think it would add to the sense of importance of reading in my room, and motivate students even more. I, also, want to use this space as a gathering area while we enjoy read alouds and lessons. When students are gathered in this one place, it gives them a sense of being part of something intimate and important. I want this to be a space for students to look forward to enjoying and using.
