Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My program at our high school is in its 3rd year, and it is shaping up to be a truly extraordinary experience for our students. The ACES program was developed specifically for students who receive support in ALL of their content classes per their IEP. What makes our program different is that it is a student-centered, competency based program. ACES measures student progress on demonstration of competence in content or subject areas using a variety of assessments. Learning is not measured by traditional seat time.
Our mission is to re-engage incoming ninth graders and returning students who have fallen off-track so that they can see the connection between what they are learning in school and the community around them.
Many of our students are overage, have difficulty attending regularly, or have been held back in middle school. For these students, the traditional class setting is not engaging, but they still have a goal of earning their diploma.
Our goal is to prepare our students in the ACES program for post secondary success and to facilitate meaningful participation in their community.
My Project
Students use my space for a variety of reasons. One of the major reasons is to complete their credit recovery classes online. It is important that during this time students can detach from the stressors of their outside life in order to access their online content classes and continue to make progress towards graduation. Often times they are hungry, stressed out and need a therapeutic space to help regulate their emotions.
Having comfortable seating, stress balls, earphones to ensure a quiet calm atmosphere, and snacks really goes a long way in the 53 minutes they are with me.
Being able to provide the basics for my students will mean a lot to them. Many are focusing on strategies to help regulate themselves, but having the physical tools to do so will make it much easier for them to be successful.
