Do you remember going back in groups to read aloud with your teacher at those kidney shaped tables? I had one in my old room that I was not allowed to move into my new room. I am using two trapezoid tables that move constantly and limit me to five cramped 5th graders at a time. Please help!
I am teaching in a fifth grade classroom in the Midwest.
I have 21 students in my classroom. We have our students from 3 classes rotate to Science, Social Studies, and Writing. This helps our fifth graders get ready for 6th grade where they switch classrooms for all of their classes. This means that I see all of our fifth grade students every day. Our building has been updating at a slow rate. However, due to the economy, I feel we are at a standstill. My students have adjusted to my makeshift reading center but I know they are cramped and uncomfortable.
My Project
During our reading group time each student reads aloud to me. All students are reading at the same time and I am able to monitor and give help when they stumble on unfamiliar words. I look at their fluency and help with vocabulary while they are reading. We also do some work with comprehension and text support when we finish a reading session. I have always enjoyed listening to my students read but this year we are cramped around these tables that were never intended for this use. My students need a reading table to meet with me during reading groups. I did not even have these tables in my new room but I searched our building and found these trapezoid tables in the boiler room. I am determined to succeed with my students and your support is greatly appreciated.
I had greater flexibility with my groups and more space for my students last year.
I want the students to feel comfortable and not scrunched up next to one another. I am very proud of them for not complaining about this but I can tell by their faces that they hate being so close to one another. Your support will bring a piece of furniture into the classroom that will be around for years to come. Thank you for your time and support.
