Help me give my students an iPad that will help them be able to take pictures of their classroom work and immediately translate it to English using a Google Translate App.
English Language Learners are such a joy to teach. They come to school every day with such ambition and joy to learn English. I currently have 14 English language learners, 3 are new to our district and have very limited English. They all come from different countries with a wide variety of needs. All of my students have such a positive attitude and want to do their best to contribute to our classroom community.
Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about-Benjamin Lee Whorf
The students I teach are in 2-5 grade. Most of them come to my classroom for support during the day, but 3 of them are in my classroom half of the day due to their limited English. They work on phonics, reading, vocabulary, math and social studies. I help them translate what the other students in their classrooms are doing so they can continue to learn at their grade level.
My Project
Help me give my students a device that will help them communicate and be successful in the classroom by translating what they say in their language to English and translate classroom work through the google translate app/camera and by using apps that reinforce reading, math, phonics, and English.
Technology is something that would help them increase their communication with teachers/peers through google translate.
My students are so eager to learn English and communicate. They come to America to have a better life and education. Since our school has a poverty rate of 50% or more, many of my students do not have access to this type of technology at home. Without the use of google translate it is very difficult to communicate with these students and teach them in a regular classroom. It is very time consuming to type up all of the work we are doing in the classroom and translate it through Google docs. The iPad allows me to take pictures of their textbook pages, worksheets, and books they are reading and translate them instantly. This will allow them some independence in the classroom by translating their own work and not relying on the teacher or their peers to try and explain it in a way that they can understand.
