Transitioning to Live With Sensory and Autistic Characteristics
Help me give my students the opportunity to use the sensory items listed in order to aid with sensory issues and for students with autism to become relaxed and not overwhelmed in their classrooms and daily transitions.
Many students attending my school have autism and sensory issues which can interfere at times with their academic and educational performance due to unforeseen sensory issues. Many of the students have difficulties with the daily demands of the classroom which often requires a place to deescalate and have a calming time. Some students, are not able to handle the transitions of the general education classroom and need a place to calm and relax.

The students I am referring to are in co-teaching, often high functioning general education classes which can be overstimulating, anxiety-producing, overwhelming and at times create behavioral overloads which are often overlooked in the general education classes. Many of the students I am referring to do not like noises and are allowed to go to a quiet area for lunch due to their sensory issues. We have students that need a calm sensory area to relax and calm down after over-stimulation, explosive behaviors such as screaming and crying due to the demands of the regular education and special classes.
My Project
If the project is fully funded, I would like to provide students with atypical behaviors the opportunity to engage and explore sensory items to decrease overstimulation, anxiety, stress and behavioral problems associated with sensory issues and autistic characteristics. These students often have difficulties understanding and integrating their senses and simply do not have the resources to calm the sensations associated with autism and sensory issues.
After teaching the students how to use the materials, I would like to promote self-advocacy to allow the students to understand that the materials and tools are for their use due to their sensory overloads.
My school is 44 percent free and reduced lunch in which some of these students belong. I would like for the students to understand that teachers are listening to their specific needs and want to help and better understand their needs.
