I teach at a smaller rural school where students are eager to learn about the greater world around them!
They are so eager to be at school they RUN to class, ready to see what awaits them.
Over 70% of the students at school receive free or reduced-price lunch and many of the students in my class are English Language Learners who are at a stage of learning where they need as much exposure to books as possible to help them acquire the English language. They love to read books in class and will explore books for extended amounts of time.
The students in my class are sweet and caring, they are inquisitive, imaginative and insightful, they are explorers and problems solvers.
My Project
Students coming from first grade to second grade are ready to make a transition from reading short story books to reading chapter books. The Branches Series of chapter books are of high quality and high interest tailored to the reading levels of these students.
These books will help young readers to continue establishing a love of reading.
The Branches Series books will be added to my sparse classroom library and will give students more choices in what they read at their appropriate reading levels. Students will have access to the books during independent reading time and will also be allowed to borrow them to read at home. Many of my students love to read with a buddy, so having two copies of the books will encourage students to read together and have discussions about what they are reading.
I believe the more a child reads for fun, the better reader he/she will become. I want to help my students be wild about reading, and transitional chapter books will be one bridge to help them continue their reading journey!
