Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Supervise a typical formal high school dance, and this is what you will observe: elegantly attired teenagers standing in lines gyrating against each other in what they refer to as "freak dancing" or more bluntly, "humping." Not a pretty site! Imagine instead the same formally clad teenagers gracefully fox-trotting or waltzing across the dance floor. Experience has shown me that if we teach them, they will waltz... Last year, for an end-of-the-term pilot project, I hired Michael Miller, a ballroom dance teacher, to bring a little bit of refinement to our dances. For one month he taught our students the basics of ballroom. And surprise, surprise...at the last dance of the year our students enthusiastically incorporated East Coast Swing, Nightclub Two Step and even the Cha Cha into their once limited repertoire. (I have also learned from experience that if a teacher slips a CD to a DJ, he will play it...) A survey of the students indicated that 82% of our 300 students wish to continue with dance lessons; I would like to offer them the opportunity this year. I teach English and coordinate the AVID program at our small middle college high school. Because we are so small, we have no elective offerings in the arts. Students who wish to take them must do so at the junior college with which we are affiliated (Harbor College). I would happily volunteer to supervise and assist with instructing ballroom dance classes after school, once a week for an hour for the rest of the school year. (My reward will be to chaperone an elegant--instead of vulgar--winter formal, homecoming, and prom.) The cost of hiring a professional ballroom dance is a small price to pay to transform freakers into Freds and Gingers.
