Transforming a Special Education Classroom into a Therapeutic Learning Space

My students need a rocker chair, mini trampoline, and rug for whole group activities to practice mindfulness, listen to read aloud stories, have classroom discussions and to create a comfortable warm space to sit.

My Students

This classroom is a therapeutic special day class grades four through six in Northern California. The students this project will serve are students with social and emotional challenges/disabilities. Many of the students enjoy reading, playing board games, playing sports, solving puzzles and creating personal graphic novels/pictures.

Students in this classroom range in academic abilities and social skills, come from diverse home environments and benefit from a sense of community at school each day for one another.

Students benefit from having choice in their academic schedule, classroom, seating and fidget object to support their learning needs.

My Project

The materials will make a difference in student learning by updating a therapeutic special education classroom space. Students' learning will be supported by these materials by creating a space that supports needs in the areas of reading, writing, academic stamina, social skills, attention, and focus. A rug will provide the classroom with a warm and bright place to meet for Reader's and Writer's Workshop, for whole group discussions and an area to practice mindfulness using the mindfulness activities on the materials list.

To provide students with additional movement options the Floor is Lava game and mini trampoline allow students easy access to inside classroom movement break choices.

The rocker chair and rug will provide additional flexible seatings options for students.
