How do we stimulate and inspire the imagination of our children? We try to do it daily through our instruction, but there is no better way than through great literature. Through stories, children learn to figure out the world around them. They share the character's experiences and grow with them.
I teach in a wonderful inner-city elementary school where the students are eager to learn.
My students are special needs students who want to learn and grow like their peers. They work hard, and they are learning to read well, to think critically and to grow in their decoding and comprehension skills. Motivation is the key. Great literature inspires children to read independently. I know through their independent reading they will achieve more of their dreams as they become better readers.
My Project
I am requesting books that will inspire them to keep on growing and learning. I am asking for books of poetry that are great to use in the classroom for choral reading and for memorization. I need concepts books on building good character that will hopefully inspire the students to become better citizens as they mature. I am also requesting a set of books with tapes to aid boys and girls who need extra reading help. My last request is for a set of classic literature. These stories are wonderful for teaching lessons in how students should meet challenges throughout their life.
Most of my students don't have meaningful books in their homes.
Some don't have books at all. If my project is funded, the books will attract students to want to read. The materials will also help me, as a classroom teacher, to come up with creative strategies and lessons to use to motivate students and inspire independent reading.
