I am asking for donations to fund a classroom set of the young adult novel, "Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" by Erika Sanchez. This novel was a finalist for the National Book Award, is on the TIME's list of best young adult novels of all time and is currently being produced into a motion picture directed by America Ferrera. Asides from the critical acclaim that this novel has received, this book is, put simply, a transformative and powerful story about a young Mexican American girl's dream to become a writer despite the challenges she faces as a low-income daughter of immigrants in Chicago.
The storyline is captivating, following Julia's journey after her sister's untimely and tragic death as she navigates grief and challenging cultural norms in the midst of the chaos of adolescence.
Topics in this story include mental health and mental illness, suicide and suicidal ideation, the college admissions process as a first-generation student, gender roles and sexual violence, and the immigrant experience in the United States. Although these topics are a serious and difficult to teach, they echo the reality of many of my students and reading a book where they can see pieces of themselves reflected will have immense impact. Not to spoil the ending, but Julia makes it to college!
Julia's story is about hope, resilience, and the beautiful and challenging experiences that make being a teenager a pivotal moment in your life. In teaching this book, I hope to inspire and motivate my students to follow their dreams, regardless of the barriers they face.
