To understand the need for a redesign of the ISB library it is helpful to know more about the school itself. The International School of Beaverton is a public option school within the Beaverton School District. That means that the majority of students are selected for admission through a lottery process. There is no entrance requirement or admissions interview for selection.
All students at ISB in grades 6-12 are engaged in the rigorous International Baccalaureate, or IB, program and are expected to expected to complete independent research in all content areas.
During grades 6-10 students participate in the IB Middle Years Program, which culminates in an independent research personal project. In grades 11-12 all students participate in IB Diploma Program classes and are required to write an independent research essay, called the extended essay, for graduation. The school library is a cornerstone of the work that students complete during all of their years at the school.
My Project
A key to understanding the International School of Beaverton is the school mission statement. It reads, “Our goal at ISB is to encourage students to learn through an international lens as thoughtful, compassionate world citizens. We actively embrace intellectual rigor, intercultural respect, service to our local and world communities, and the promise of a peaceful world.” (ISB School webpage). In practice, this mission statement is carried out through the daily efforts of the students and staff of ISB. This is done through presentations, guest speakers, volunteer hours, school activities, and collaborations with the global community.
The school library is the heart of the school and allows the patrons (students and staff) to fulfill the mission of the school.
All classes move through the space regularly and learning is enhanced by the resources and people who work in the space. It is logical to improve the space based upon the requests of the patrons of the school to assist them as they carry out this lofty mission. The tables specifically requested in this grant will facilitate collaboration and flexibility for all the library patrons.
