Training to Teach Reading With the Best in the Field
I need to train with the experts at Columbia University's Teachers College Summer Institute to be better prepared to teach my diverse readers the literacy skills they need to be lifelong learners.
My students are bubbly, inquisitive, and excited about learning. They are children who come from all different walks of life and take school seriously.
The students are a diverse group of immigrants, refugees, and US-born children, many of whom speak a language other than English at home.
They are curious and observant and they make meaning through conversations and inquiry. They love listening to me read them stories and they take pride in developing their independent reading skills. They like a challenge and they love showing what they have learned. They are eager to grow as thinkers, problem solvers, and global citizens.
My Project
Currently, my students' reading levels range from second grade levels to fifth grade levels. Finding effective differentiation strategies for each of them is a daily challenge for me. I want to better serve not only my struggling readers, but my English language learners and advanced readers as well. I want to learn more about how to help them gain comprehension and word attack skills so that they can enjoy reading and are able to use reading as a tool to power their learning.
At the Reading Institute, I will be able to deepen my knowledge of how to push all of my students to the next level and sharpen my ability to detect the problems they encounter.
I will have the chance to learn from experts in the field about the most effective Reader's Workshop teaching strategies and have the chance to collaborate with teachers from all over the country and the world. I will be able to work in small groups each day to develop my own tool kit as well as ask targeted questions to the experts about the problems I face during the school year.
I hope to leave my week of study empowered to better serve my diverse group of students and ready to share what I've learned with fellow teachers at my school.
