I am in my third year teaching special education. This is my second year teaching the CARES K-2nd grade program, which serves the highest need special education students in our district. Our students have a variety of disabilities that interfere with their education, such as autism, ADHD, and physical disabilities which requires specific teaching strategies that allow them to learn based on their strengths. That means teaching with things they can hold, manipulate, and play with. They also respond to fun, bright colors and things that attract their interest.
My Project
The students in my special education classroom all have different learning needs, but many of those needs co-exist with ADHD. On top of having unique learning needs, they also struggle with attention and focus.
As I was looking for resources to meet their needs, I came across a book series I had not heard of before; Steve Herman wrote a series of books that help children learn to control their behaviors and emotions through stories where they must teach their dragons these skills.
For my students, reading these books will help them learn these important skills without making them feel guilty about their behavior. After all, they are teaching their dragons, not themselves!
Because I am trying to meet the needs of my ADHD students, I also included several other books that will help my students learn behavior management, as well as some ADHD fidgit and sensory tools. The goal is increased behavior management, which results in increased learning.
