Track Spikes & Uniforms for H.S. Underprivileged Athletes

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The student-athletes in the school where I work come from financially strapped families. With the Cross Country and Track & Field programs I want to give them the feeling of accomplishment and confidence. So one day they can take these experiences and teach the next generation.
The high school is in the Bronx New York.
It is a Title 1 school which is a low income low achieving school. Last year it was categorized with the most special education students out of any high school in the country & this year we have more. The athletes on my team are great!
Even though we do not have a great practice facility; we run in the hallways, & we do not have any funds for fancy uniforms, they come out and compete to their highest potentials. Last year we had three athletes go to college & now are on their college track teams. For the most part they are first generation, single parent, low income children.
My Project
The team I coach is not given one dollar by administration to run the team. All the meet registrations, uniforms and supplies are paid by the athletes. But this year the school said we can not fund raise in the school building. I don't know how we will come up with it.
Last year when the school year was ending & the school was cleaning out the locker rooms, I went through the pile of old clothes that were to be thrown out, I took t-shirts and shorts with the school name on them brought them home, washed them and will give them to the athletes as their team uniforms this year. But it's tough when we go to a track meet and have to compete with teams with nice "real" track uniforms. I want to give the athletes on the team the feeling of "real" uniforms.
Also spikes, not every athlete on the team can afford track spikes, so what they do is the first person runs the relay takes his spikes off so the fourth runner can wear them. I feel every athlete should have their own pair of spikes.
Throughout my life I know how athletes changed my life and I want the same for the student-athletes on my team.
So one day they will be good citizens, fathers, and role models in society.
