A typical day at the track starts with a team speech, then the warm up lap, then team dynamics. After we come together as a team, student-athletes look for their name on the workout board and begin their individual workouts. My team is diversified between those who have the extreme competitive drive, those who just want to get in shape, and those who enjoy being part of a team.
I teach at a small school with a wide variety of students.
Our student body encompasses a wide range of ethnic diversity, as well as socio-economical diversity. There are many students on free and reduced lunch, so we have students who are unable to purchase even basic necessities, so many of them don't even have access to proper attire or shoes. Many students join track and field to be part of a team and create a family, as well as to work out because most of them don't have access to a gym. They come to track practice to feel like they are really part of something while working on developing into better athletes and all around students.
My Project
This donation will help our team with flexibility, motivation, and courage. There are many athletes who want to try going over hurdles, but they're scared to make that first attempt at a hurdle. With they foam hurdles, many athletes will try something they wouldn't try before.
Not only will the hurdles help the athletes try something new, but they're perfect for gym days.
We live in a community with many rainy days, so we're forced to take our large team into the gym. On these days we do circuit training with our team, so they could continue to hurdle indoors.
The yoga mats are for the days we need to add stretching, planking, and abdominal work into our circuits. As of now, we workout on the hard gym floor, so the mats would be a much-needed benefit!
