Thank you for the opportunity to make this proposal! I teach 4th and 5th grade Resource students in a growing community called Summerville, South Carolina. These students receive instruction in the areas of Reading, Written Expression, and Math. In my 18 years of experience, I have observed that students must hold the hope that they can be successful in order to make success a reality. By the time they reach the upper elementary grades and have experienced years of struggle, they have become hardened to the idea that they can succeed. TouchMath provides enough of a "hands-on experience to make sense out of abstract computation. By Grade 4 and older, special education students come to the classroom demoralized by their unsuccessful experiences with numbers. They frequently hate math. They think they don't ?get it?. And, you know what? They're right. They don't get it. They've been over simple concepts a hundred times; they didn't understand what they were taught and promptly forgot it. They not only have gaps in math skills; they may also have an attitude problem. Another math lesson just means another failure. They need an approach to math that corrects problems?quickly. These students aren't going to ?tune in? and experience another failure when they're already tuned out. I can change their attitudes and mathematical skills in a matter of days by introducing them to TouchMath. The simplicity of the TouchMath method ensures success for nearly all of my special needs students. They CAN experience the hope of success, and it won't take years of frustrating repetition.
