My Students
I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in grades K-5. Our rural elementary school, in upstate New York, has a student population of 340 students. Students who are at risk of failing the New York State Assessments and students who are having difficulty academically are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.
My students come from a diverse, economic background, with a significant amount of students who receive free or reduced-priced lunch.
They are all very eager to learn and love coming to school. Our students are independent, hardworking, and compassionate.
My Project
"Few children learn to read books by themselves. Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word; someone has to show them the way." ~Orville Prescott My students need the basics of reading-phonics manipulatives, so that they too can discover the wonderful world of reading.
The resources I have requested include fun and hands-on activities to help my youngest students learn the basics of reading-phonics.
Without basic phonics skills, students will never be able to read fluently. It is only with a solid foundation of basic reading skills, including CVC words, blends, digraphs and vowels, that students will be able to become successful and confident readers.
The Touch & Read Phonics Set will allow my students to form a solid foundation of reading skills. The Privacy Dividers will create a distraction-free work space for my students. Many of my students become distracted very easily and these dividers will keep them focused on their reading tasks. This will allow them to make more progress and in turn, they will feel more confident in themselves as a reader. These materials, including the Phonics Touch and Read set and the Privacy Dividers, will be allow my student to be on their way to becoming independent and strategic readers.
