Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are 13 boys and 7 girls in my classroom! I have one Caucasian student, one biracial student, three African American Students, and 16 Latino/a students.

On the first day of school, only eight students spoke English.

Now all are speaking mostly English or attempting English! My students LOVE superheroes, Legos, and tablets. They're not too fond of green veggies, but they enjoy snacking on apples, grapes, peaches, bananas, and oranges. They look forward to center time and can't wait for our GoNoodle Brain Breaks!

My Kinders come from extremely low income homes. All 20 of my precious babies receive free breakfast and lunch and one is involved in the Backpack club (bags of food for the weekend). Many of them live in apartments, although some live in single family homes. Most have never been outside their community. All of my students were screened as the academically lowest students of their age in their geographic location.

Many of my students are experiencing a ton of "firsts" inside of my classroom from opening their first carton of milk to working on their first computer. I love seeing their bright little smiles as they learn each day!

My Project

I never heard of Ozobots until I attended a technology development session and I was completely intrigued. As a teacher who loves STEM, the ideas began flooding in! Not only because I got my hands on a ROBOT (which was an awesome experience as an adult!) but for the fact that these robots are developmentally appropriate for even preschoolers to use! Yep, I said it! Preschoolers CAN use robots! With these robots, my students will BEG to write, draw, and learn shapes, colors, numbers, letters, and more!

Coding increases higher order thinking!

When students use the Ozobots, they must use a preset color combination (the code) within their drawing in order to make the robot do it's tricks. My students will be able to put these codes in their drawings of letters, numbers, shapes, etc. and watch the robots follow the lines and do a trick! But for the robot to be able to follow along, students must really focus on proper handwriting and fine motor skills in order to make the robots go. Lessons like these will help engage students in routine lessons of letters, numbers, shapes, and colors, which are important standards for Kindergarten readiness. Being able to develop and apply fine motor skills along with science, technology, reading, math, and engineering simultaneously, they are thinking critically, learning how to cooperate and collaborate in a real-world way! In preschool, my students will be enriched with skills and able to take an extra step to be successful very early on!
