Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low-income families. Most of them receive free or reduced-price lunch. Some of them do not have enough money to buy school supplies. Some of them need to walk to school because they do not have enough money for a bus.
Many of our students deal with different family issues that greatly impact their academic and behavioral performance.
My students experience parents getting divorced, a lack of parents, having a baby at their young age, being homeless, babysitting siblings, working to help out their parents, etc. Most of our students are Hispanic. I have a good number of students with special education needs as well as ELL students. Many of our students will be the first in their families to go to college.
My Project
Who doesn't like to be rewarded with different prizes? Well, for sure not my students! Contrary, my students will do a lot to get some tangible rewards. During this unique year, I asked my students what would they like as rewards for their good performance... I got a large range of students' needs and wants.
To keep my students motivated, I would like to reward their improvements and achievements with prizes like canvas boards, paint, paintbrushes and paint trays, board games and outdoor games, stress balls and fidgets, make-up, phone charges, candy, sweets, keyboards, book, stationery, tea cups, tea, crackers, water bottles, and wifi extenders.
I believe that letting students choose their potential rewards is important and gives them the feel of belonging. I believe that these various rewards will help students to get through the struggles of quarantine...
Certainly, students can do much more - behaviorally and academically - if they see rewards they chose waiting for them. Will you help us out? :)
