My students need Celestron ExlipSmart Solar Filters and Smartphone Adapters to modify our telescopes and witness one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena up close and personal, the August 21 solar eclipse.
My students are the light of my life! They come from such a diverse background and together our day is made better for it. Our school is a rural Title I school that brings students in from as far as ten miles out. Many of our students are faced with immense struggles. Struggles that could otherwise take away from the learning. However, it is here, at our school, that we bond together in our learning and help each other grow, moving forward to a brighter future.
My Project
Last year my students were awarded five telescopes for our classroom Lending Library, through a previous DonorsChoose project. This year we are at it again, but this time instead of viewing the moon, we are set up to view the total solar eclipse. Our small rural town is right in the path of this incredible natural phenomenon, and this project seeks to help students get an even better view of it. With the filters I have requested, students will be able to safely view the total solar eclipse through our portable telescopes. In addition, we will be able to take pictures of the event as it progresses through the phases using the smartphone mounts. Both of these experiences will be an amazing segue into our environmental science lesson on alternative energy, one that I hope to be able to provide to my students with your help!
