My students come from an urban community in California. Seventy-five receive free or reduced price lunch. We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools, which has made it a bit difficult and has forced us to use our creativity to teach. I have a diverse group of energetic first graders this year. They range from a few high performing to majority of low performing students. Yet, I am determined to provide students with meaningful learning experiences where they can acquire life long skills to be successful individuals.
My Project
"Ms. Lam, I just lost a tooth." "Me too!" Many of my students are beginning to lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth are coming in. Other students are getting new shiny silver crowns and fillings to patch up the cavities they have. Still others have yellow plaque buildup smiles. Their smiles are so bright, but their teeth need proper care. I can't help but to notice the conditions of their teeth when they smile.
I don't want my students to brush for the sake of brushing.
By providing dental education, students will be able to understand and take ownership for the health of their teeth. I want my students to learn how to brush and floss properly to produce healthy habits.
If all the students have their own toothbrush kits and floss, they can use them right away. It produces excitement that can motivate students to take more action in brushing and flossing. They can practice what they learn at home. Dental hygiene is an important part of becoming healthy students. Less dental work and office visits mean more time in the classroom.
