Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine my classroom during December in the middle of our light painting project. All the overhead lights are off but in the relative darkness you see flashes of light. Forty students working in small groups with cameras on tripods using colored finger lights to draw wings behind their model or swinging string lights to create a rainbow blur. They spread out as much as possible in our computer lab to avoid "light pollution," some even use the space under my desk. The room hums with excitement and gasps of wonder at the magic they are creating with lights and cameras.
In the end, the photos turn out fantastic but only the most skilled photographers are able to avoid the computer screens and keyboards that invade the background.
More than 80% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. The student body is extremely diverse with students who are Latino/a, Pacific Islander, Black, Filipino, Korean, Cambodian, Ukrainian, etc. We are one of two schools in the district designated for newcomer and refugee students. If you are looking to help a school in-need, this is it!
It is devastating when a student takes a brilliant photo that is ruined by the limitations of our space. Currently, I only have 2 areas in my classroom with backdrops but when I have 40 students per class, they resort to taking photos anywhere instead of waiting for a turn. It would completely change my students' experience as photographers (and their work) to have these additional backdrops.
Can you picture them setting up an area for a photoshoot? Sorting through the backdrops and picking the perfect one. Then their joy when the photo turn out so well, with nothing to "ruin it" in the background. Help me make that possible.
