This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are in the fourth grade at a small, urban elementary school. They are an enthusiastic group of learners who are working hard to reach reading milestones. One of the best ways to engage my students is through the use of games to reinforce what they are learning in our rules based reading instruction. The games come as a digital file so the cardstock is needed to help print the materials that will last through multiple uses and can be color coded. In addition, they benefit from visual supports to align with phonics lessons. This project includes a "starter pack" for a sound wall which provides visual models of the correct placement of teeth, mouth, and lips while making specific phonemes. The last part of the project includes a highly recommended book of silly rhymes the students can use to do fluency drills. Frequent, repeated readings of a variety of text help to improve the overall fluency, which is key to reading success. It is important that we make the most of the time we have together in small groups to ensure effective progress. This project will provide the "tools" we need to continue our journey to become lifelong readers and writers.
