Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"You can't change a learning disability, but you can change the way you approach it."
My students are African American and Latino teens with learning disabilities who come from low-income families.
Many of my students have high needs, but little resources. They often come to school burdened and distracted with problems from home and/or the community. Their disabilities add yet another layer to their struggles, making learning even more of a challenge.
My Project
The processing deficits my students have negatively affect the way they take in information. Visual information can become jumbled at any point during transmission, when it is received or processing. Luckily, there are many easy ways to help lessen the level of difficulty they have accessing the curriculum. The students benefit immensely from simple things, such as having their handouts, charts and graphic organizers color-coded, using highlighters while moving through text, and using different colored markers to identify the parts of a paragraph/essay. Additionally, students can process notes written on the whiteboard with greater ease when items are color coded or emphasized using different colored dry-erase markers. Simple and easy accommodations like these can make all the difference. Our school, however, cannot afford the high cost of these resources.
This project will help me chip away at the layers of road blocks my students face.
It's all the little things I do in the classroom that make a big difference in the learning experiencea of my students. This project will allow me to make MANY accommodations to students who need them the most.
