I teach English in a special day program. Most of my students have learning disabilities (often multiple disabilities). Many have experienced great anxiety when they are forced to read something. As a result, they often act out to create a diversion, or shut down and don’t even try to read. They feel embarrassed that they can't compete on the same level as their peers. I believe that my students can compete with their general education peers; they just need the right materials.
