Tools of Belonging for Diverse Learners in Class

Help me give my students books for class lessons on diversity, inclusion, compassion, and belonging and tools to practice compassion while they remain calm and focused in class!

My Project

Schools have to address so much more than academics. We support students' social interaction and emotion regulation skills through classroom lessons, small groups, and individual coaching. You can help us provide the SEL tools that we need for these lessons! Students benefit from direct instruction on differences, diversity, and inclusion. The stories included in this project introduce students to different perspectives and life experiences. Through these lessons we practice compassion, improve inclusion, and foster a sense of belonging for all our learners. As students learn about each other, we will also practice ways to show compassion and include all classmates and members of our school community through acts of kindness and belonging.

Our learners need a variety of tools to be successful in their classrooms.

Calming strategies such as weighted items and targeted fidgets help many of our students be successful and use their self-regulation skills in the general education classroom. Small snacks are included to address immediate physical needs (it is much harder to learn when you are hungry!) and demonstrate another way we can look out for one another. One of our core lessons on compassion and belonging is modeling that we all need different tools to learn!

Students will collaboratively create calm-down kits and fidget boxes for their classroom by choosing the tools that they think their classmates would find the most helpful. They will also write notes of affirmation and compassion to give to peers throughout the school year. We increase compassion and belonging when students with diverse strengths and learning challenges are learning together. With these supports and accommodations, students can thrive!

We are using student ratings of culture and climate as well as teacher ratings for how students demonstrate empathy and collaborative problem solving to measure our students' understanding of compassion.
