More students than ever are coming to school with a lot of feelings. Often those feelings are ones that help us learn like excitement, curiosity, and gratitude. Sometimes the feelings make it hard to learn like sadness about being away from parents or grandparents, worry about what's going to happen next with COVID, and stress about being around so many people again. This year, we are using a lot of tools to build up strategies for recognizing and processing those emotions. These tools will help us refresh our calming kits with new and exciting strategies for naming the feeling, breathing, and staying mindful by focusing on texture or pressure. Students need to feel safe before they can learn. These kits help our students find that feeling of safety even when a day feels really hard. By learning to use these sensory-based strategies, students are also building emotion-regulation skills that will serve them long after they leave our school!
