Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My kindergarten students are starting their educational journey at our charter school. My school, a high-performing, public charter school located in the southeast side of Chicago, serves approximately four hundred scholars grades K-6. 89% of our scholars qualify for free or reduced price lunch, meaning that our scholars' families have difficulty purchasing school items to set their child up for success in the classroom. Of these scholars, I will have thirty of them in my class, each starting their track with a clean slate, regardless of their educational background.

My goal as an educator is to provide all of my students with the fundamental academic skills, critical thinking ability, and strength of character to excel in high school, college, and a career of their choice.

My Project

As time goes on, it has become more prevalent that children need to learn self-regulation skills at an early age. As one of their educators, I want to be able to facilitate the attainment of these skills. It is important that children can figure out on their own and through their own reasoning what they need when they are faced with an obstacle. These obstacles can be rooted in frustration, anger, sadness, and confusion.

When it comes to students learning the concept of self-regulation, it is important that.

as their educators, we provide them the tools they need to be successful. With these tools, students will be able to take a break and reevaluate what is causing their upset feelings. We hope in that time they will eventually learn how to calm themselves down and responsibly handle the situation they are facing.
