The students that are in my classroom come from a culturally diverse, urban area of Iowa. There are many different ethnicities at our school, with a large population of them being English Language Learners. We are also a Title I school that serves PreK-5th grade. A large majority of our students come from low income families, so our school provides free breakfast and lunch for all students. Since our students come from a high poverty area, many come to school to be in a safe and caring environment. Due to trauma and other triggers, our students sometimes do not have the social-emotional skills to communicate or cope with their emotions. As a school, we are continuously working on creating an environment where students can learn skills and strategies to communicate and cope in a positive way.
My Project
The vast majority of our students come from a high-poverty area or have trauma due to immigration or other childhood ACE factors. Students with trauma often struggle with positive social and emotional skills. Learning cannot happen unless students are in a mindset where learning can have an impact. Our school is working to give our students instruction in social and emotional learning to help students get to this mindset. Providing our students with a peace corner that is equipped with a white noise machine, bubble timers, and chair balls, among other tools, will help them refocus and calm their bodies and minds in a quick and effective way to allow them to get back to their learning.
