Our school district is located in a small rural town in northeast Iowa. My 7th and 8th graders represent a diverse population of students, including ethnic minority, gender distribution, and special needs. We are in a low income/high poverty school district, with over 60% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students excel when learning through hands-on and student-led projects.
I provide STEM lessons that are relevant to students and tied to the real world. I try to inspire my students to engage in their own learning and to have a sense of wonder.
This Cricut and other materials will help my students take their projects to the real world. They will use the tool to write, design and create signage and other print projects to communicate their claims to their peers and community.
I will also be able to increase rigor and student engage within my classroom by using this machine.
When working on Project Based Learning projects, students investigate authentic real world issues and communicate their findings or solution to the appropriate community audience (peers, school board, city council, etc.). The Cricut will help them create high quality posters, T-shirts, or banners to communicate their findings. They will also learn how to use the Design Space computer program to create projects using different mediums such as vinyl, paper, foil, etc. Who knows, this could lead a student to explore other design career fields, including graphic design and engineering. I am truly excited to see how this machine will change my classroom environment and more importantly excite my students.
