Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am teaching reading to students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade who are struggling to read at grade level. Throughout the day, I meet with three to eight students and work with them in small groups. I have students who have come to America from Africa, Europe, Central America, and Asia. They speak Korean, Amharic, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese and English. Most of my students are bilingual-emergent English-language learners. They are excited at the prospect of being successful in school, going to college, and attaining the American Dream.
My Project
Based on themes of Calm, Care, and Community, I will use the materials from this project to teach daily lessons on Social/Emotional Learning. In Community Circles, students will learn appropriate personal space using the Sit Spots. They will respond to non-verbal signals, and they will practice English language skills as they respond to and discuss the themes and lessons of the books. Students will also learn different ways to calm their bodies when they are angry or upset. Students will learn to recognize a range of emotions, respond appropriately to negative emotions, show care for each other, and build a healthy learning community.
