A teacher friend introduced me to the world of Tonies. It is a box that plays stories and music just by placing a character on the box. Groups of students can listen, or with headphones, it can be a solo activity. It reminds me of Books on CD, or tape if you are Gen X like me.
We loved listening to audiobooks, and my students will love it too.
Tonies have all their favorite book and TV characters. They listen to songs and stories while using their imagination to frame the story in their minds.
Audio stories build fluency as a reader hears what fluent reading sounds like. It also builds comprehension as the students have to focus and pay attention to the detail of the words as there are no pictures. This skill helps younger students become better readers in older grades as chapter books have fewer illustrations. Students enjoy listening to these stories and songs as they are loved characters that teach skills as well like Daniel Tiger, Pete the Cat, Llama, Llama, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Storybots!
It also helps with social-emotional regulation as students can remove themselves from the group, put on headphones and get lost in the imaginary world books can bring us. The National Geographic stories go along with our learning modules and science standards.
