Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future. With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator, to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer.

Our school is one hundred percent poverty stricken with only one other in the state of South Carolina.

We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success.

By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.

My Project

Understanding the difference between needs and wants is a life skill. I want to create a token economy system in my classroom, where students will get paid for good behavior and being a good classmate. Then on Fridays, students will have the opportunity to spend their money. They can spend it on items they need, like yellow pencils, scissors, socks, or healthy snacks, or they can use it for more expensive items they want, like special treats, mechanical pencils, or other desired items. However, if they are in need of a pencil, they will have to make an important decision.

My students need to learn the difference between a need and want, so in their future, they will better know how to properly take care of themselves.

Needs and wants are hard to learn as a kid, and the misunderstanding between the two can be detrimental as my students become adults one day. Please help make this important lesson be taught in a meaningful way.
