This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a TRUST counselor to approximately three hundred students at a middle school in the South Florida area. The children are in sixth through eighth grade, and their ages range from twelve to fifteen. Eighty-four percent of our students come from households with lower-than-average incomes. Four out of five of our students speak a language other than English at home: their parents are immigrants from Central and South America.

We have just gone through Hurricane Irma and some of our children are living in temporary housing.

My Project

Many of my children need basic toiletries: toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and deodorant. That last is a must: it's late September and the temperature here in South Florida is still in the late eighties. It would be great to have individual-sized toiletry supplies that we can hand out to our teens as needed. We initiated this scheme a year ago and it has worked very well, but unfortunately we now find ourselves running short of supplies. With basic hygiene concerns attended to, our kids can address growth, acculturation and academic issues with confidence. Do you think you would be able to help our students out?
